Weekly Poetry Recitation: CHICKEN SOUP WITH RICE

Share the distinctive style and rhythm of poetry as a genre of literature...

As a tribute to author and illustrator, Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), widely

considered to be the most important children's book artist of the 20th Century,

students in Kiel's Library/Media Center will be devoting the year to

reading Chicken Soup With Rice

Repetitive reading encourages phonemic awareness, rhyme, automaticity, and

the patterns and sounds used in poetry!

Chicken Soup With Rice is a collection of twelve charming rhymes and illustrations for the

twelve months of the year.  This book is a fun read-aloud demonstrating the progression

of the year, the seasons, and the power of poetry.  Each month will be dedicated to a

poem from the book.

The American Library Association awarded Mr. Sendak with the Caldecott Medal

for Where The Wild Things Are in 1964.
