Dear Parents and Guardians,

School is in full swing, as the halls and classrooms are active. New projects and initiatives, such as Writing Across the Curriculum, have begun and student sports, clubs and activities are underway. We would like to thank all of the parents for their support and help in making this a great start to the school year so far.

As we move into October, we will look to continue to transition all of our sixth grade students into the school environment. There will be a sixth grade parent meeting on Friday, September 26 at 8:30 AM to discuss Sixth Grade Team programs, activities and procedures. The Sixth Grade Team will also be discussing team policies and expectations with parents. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria.

All Pearl Miller students will also participate in the Writing Across the Curriculum Kick Off, which will take place on Monday, September 29. This is a very special initiative, not only as a district goal, but it is one of our school goals for the 2008-2009 school year and very intertwined with our interdisciplinary goals for improved student achievement and success. On this day, the students will participate in a writing exercise, which will be the first installation to their Writing Portfolio binder. These binders will be created throughout the year with examples of writing in the different subject areas.

Parents are also reminded that Back to School Night will take place on October 2nd. The evening will begin with a Pearl R. Miller welcoming in the gymnasium from 6:45-7:00 PM. Here all grade level parents will hear about new programs and initiatives that will be implemented this year. From there, sixth and seventh grade parents will follow their child's schedule for the remainder of the evening, while eighth grade parents will meet in the cafeteria to watch the Eighth Grade Team presentation.

On Friday, October 3rd, Quiet Riot, a character education program, will be presented to the Pearl Miller students and staff. This assembly will help students discover their own resources and the support in their lives to help them make appropriate choices. The goal of the performance group is to build community, encourage self respect and respect for others. The Quiet Riot group has performed in over 4500 schools in the tri-state area. Each program will include storytelling, comedy and music.

Other important school events and dates have been placed on the school activity calendar, which can be accessed on the Pearl R. Miller website. Please refer to this calendar for the dates of our school activities. We look forward to an exciting year and appreciate your cooperation; we also look forward to seeing everyone during Back to School Night.
Sincerely,
