DRESS
GUIDELINES
The overall guiding principle for proper school dress should be to avoid
extremes and to practice normal patterns of dress. Faculty members can
make students aware of school dress code violations and refer any "debates"
to the school administrators. The building administrators will determine
if a violation of the school dress code exists. If there is a violation
of the dress code, alternate attire can be provided by school officials
or parent/guardians. Repeat violations will result in a detention and
a parent conference.
The following types of attire are not permitted under the dress code:
- Shorts that are
higher than thumb length when the arms are at one's sides
- Skirts of mid thigh
or higher length
- Spandex shorts,
skin-tight fitting pants, skirts, dresses or shorts
- Tops that are transparent
unless shirts are worn underneath that are consistent with dress code
- Tops that have
inappropriate low necklines or arm openings that expose the chest area

(tops with a 2 inch width that fit properly are allowed)
- Tops that expose
the midriff while standing or sitting

worn as outside clothing

EARLY
DISMISSAL
During the winter months a storm may start during the day while students
are in school. If hazardous driving conditions develop, it may become
advisable to close school early. During any emergency, which would necessitate
the early closing of school, follow the procedure under DELAYED OPENING.
Parents are asked not to call the school or police. Parents should make
emergency arrangements for their child if they will not be home. All students
should know what those arrangements are prior to the start of the school
year.
EXTRA HELP
Extra help is available to all students on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
from 3:00 to 3:50 P.M. A schedule of these extra help classes by subject
and teacher will be posted in each classroom, on the Website and on the
Student Council Bulletin board. Students should notify teachers if they
plan to attend extra help that day. Students staying for extra help must
obtain a late bus pass during homeroom. Students will not receive a late
bus pass at dismissal.
FAILURE
A failing grade (F) indicates that a student, although presumed capable,
failed to meet the minimum requirements of a course. Numerous failures
may necessitate a repeat of the entire grade.
FIELD
TRIPS
Field trips are scheduled by classroom teachers throughout the school
year. Adequate notice will be sent home well in advance of the scheduled
trip date. All students are expected to follow all school policies.
FIRE
DRILLS
Fire drills are held regularly throughout the school year. Route signs
are posted in all rooms. All exit doors to the outside are posted. Students
should become familiar with all escape routes. Students are not to use
the elevator during a fire drill.
FUNDRAISING
Each class is allowed to participate in fundraisers as outlined by the
Board of Education Policy. Only school related fundraising will be permitted.
Students are not to go door-to-door to fundraise.
GRADES
Student academic progress is periodically evaluated during the school
year using a variety of techniques to measure the multifaceted skills
within each area. The following scale of grades is used to indicate the
quality of work of each student:

A student's effort,
conduct and work habits are reported according to the prescribed code
on the report card.
GROUPING
Classes are organized in a manner, which will best serve all students.
Most classes are grouped heterogeneously except the following enriched
classes: grade 6 math, grade 7 math and English and grade 8 algebra, English
and science.
GUIDANCE
AND COUNSELING
The services of the Counseling Department are available to students and
parents. These services include: group and individual counseling, schedule
planning and course selection, testing and review of test results, referrals
to special services and outside agencies, transcript and record keeping,
summer and special program offerings and parent/teacher conferences. Appointments
can be made by calling the main office or a student may stop in to schedule
an appointment.
STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
A district wide program provides both prevention and intervention initiatives
related to alcohol/drug use as well as other at risk behaviors. A counselor
(S.A.C.) is available to provide direct services to all students and parents
on a confidential basis.
HARASSMENT
AND HAZING
The Board of Education explicitly forbids any conduct or expression that
may be construed as the harassment or hazing of a student, by an employee
of the district or by another student (B.O.E. Policy #5512). Harassment
is defined as repeated unprovoked, aggressive physical or verbal behavior
that results in harm to an individual or group. Hazing is defined as the
performance of any act or the coercion of another to perform any act of
initiation that creates a risk of physical or psychological harm. All
students are encouraged to report any incident of hazing or harassment
to a teaching staff member, counselor or administrator.
HEALTH
SERVICES
The nurse's office is located on the first floor and is equipped to handle
illness and accidents as well as the instruments to conduct screenings
for all students.
MEDICATION - Any student under the care of a physician who has
prescribed medication including inhalers that must be taken during school
hours should obtain a medication form from the nurse. This form must be
completed and signed by the physician and parent/guardian before the medication
can be administered. In all such cases the medication must be deposited
with the nurse upon arrival at school and may be picked up upon leaving,
if necessary. The school nurse will arrange for the administering of the
medication at the proper time.
ILLNESS - If any student should become ill while in school, he
or she should make this fact known to the teacher and obtain a pass to
the nurse's office. The school nurse will evaluate the symptoms and determine
if the student should be sent home or return to class. If the student
is to be sent home, the nurse will contact parents who will arrange for
transportation. Students who are excluded from any activity for medical
reasons with a doctor's note will be required to present a doctor's note
for readmittance to the activity. Parents should present any pertinent
health data and/or any new or persistent health problems to the nurse.
ACCIDENTS - In cases of accidental injury, even if minor, the teacher,
coach or person in charge should be notified immediately. The student
will then be assisted to the nurse's office as soon as possible.
HOMEROOM
Homeroom is an integral part of each student's day. During this period
attendance will be taken and students will receive important information
regarding school activities, special schedules for assemblies, school-wide
testing, etc.
Homeroom begins at
8:20. Students late for homeroom will be considered tardy and must obtain
a late pass from the main office. .
PUNCTUALITY
Students are expected to arrive to school by 8:20 AM. If there are viable
circumstances that delay a student's punctual arrival the parent/guardian
should prepare a letter explaining the reason. If the excuse is approved
by administration the student tardy will be considered "Excused".
A student that arrives
late to school six times, for each semester, without a valid parental
explanation, will be assigned a lunch detention. Upon accumulation of
eight unexcused late arrivals a student will be issued an after school
detention. An after school detention will be assigned for each additional
late arrival.
All appointments should
be made outside the school day. Late and early dismissal impacts your
child's instructional progress and affects academic performance.
HOMEWORK
Homework is assigned daily. It is an extension of the learning that takes
place in school. Homework provides practice and drill that reinforces
classroom learning and can provide opportunities for independent study,
research and creative thinking. Parents can help their children by arranging
a quiet, comfortable place for the students to work and by seeing that
assignments are completed. Students should utilize the assignment planners
for daily and long term homework assignments.

an "S" to make the Honor Roll.
World languages are
considered a major subject on the seventh and eighth grade levels.
SCHOLARS BREAKFAST
ELIGIBILITY
The Scholars Breakfast, which previously acknowledged all students who
achieve HIGH HONORS for the first three marking periods, has been adjusted
to include all students with a 90 AVERAGE in all major subjects and a
B in all other subjects. Therefore, a student who earns a B+ in one marking
period still has an opportunity to attend the Scholars breakfast if the
average grade at the end of three marking periods is a 90 or better, Physical
education is considered a major subject.
