The Kiel/Sisco School is Kinnelon's state-of-the-art early childhood center where emergent literacy, experiential learning and exploratory problem solving are woven throughout core curricular areas. A warm and safe atmosphere surrounds each student creating a risk free environment. Kiel/Sisco School students continue to meet and exceed the core curriculum content standards set by the New Jersey State Department of Education. A Balanced Literacy Approach is used emphasizing a blending of phonics, authentic literature and poetry in reading, writing, spelling, and language skills. Students are taught numerous strategies through explicit mini-lessons in reading and writing. The goal is to develop students who are actively literate inside and outside the classroom. Our Everyday Mathematics program engages students in a spiraling of skills, which require the application of math concepts to everyday problems. In keeping with our commitment to establish and provide the best possible program for all learners, gifted education is delivered both in and out of the classroom. We are very proud to say that Character Education has become the core of our teaching. We want our students to be the best people they can be each and every day. Students at Kiel/Sisco School discover and interpret information as they explore their environment, past, present and future in science and social studies. The Kiel/Sisco School media center is not only a visual showcase, more importantly, it serves as the information resource center of the school. The creative talents of our parent volunteers and community members enrich student experiences with creative presentations and demonstrations throughout the year. An active Home & School Association provides a cadre of live educational performances and workshops for students ranging from an theatrical productions to live animal presentations, science, pottery, and Character Education programs. The Home & School Association also encourages and supports experimentation with innovative ideas by offering mini-grant incentives to our teachers. The success of our program at Kiel/Sisco School is driven by a strong and comprehensive primary curriculum delivered by a skilled staff of professionals. Our K-12 curriculum committees meet throughout the year to research current trends, examine, review and revise our curriculum and ensure meaningful sequencing and continuity of instruction through the grades. Common planning periods and grade level articulation meetings provide opportunities for teachers to plan and pace instruction and pool instructional strategies and resources. In addition, there is a strong commitment to staff development. Many of our teachers are involved in Self-Directed Pathways such as Action Research, Critical Friends Groups, Lesson Study and Teaching Portfolio. Much research has been documented with respect to the correlation between school achievement and parent involvement. We are proud to say that Kiel/Sisco School is a happy place where teachers, parents and community members communicate openly and work together to foster the positive development of enthusiastic, life long learners.
