KINNELON HIGH SCHOOL
HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION  MEETING

Jan.10, 2012

Meeting opened @ 7:30pm in the old café.

Dr. Merckling presented the Administrator’s Report:

  • KHS continued its fine showing at the North Jersey Area Band auditions in Dec. We had a single-season high of 7 students accepted into the Band, including 4 freshmen. In Jan., 2 of the students were accepted into the Region Band.
  • In Jan, KHS was informed that 12 students were accepted into the North Jersey Choir.
  • Update on KHS’s Golden Anniversary: As we move into 2012, we will be celebrating KHS’s Golden Anniversary with a variety of events as we memorialize the journey of graduating the Class of 1965. The first event was an alumni basketball game that followed the Boy’s Varsity and JV games vs. Montville on Sat., Jan. 7. There were about 30 players. The next scheduled event is the Spring Concert and Reception for Alumni on March 28 and then Homecoming on Oct. 26. If anyone is interested in helping coordinate events for the Anniversary or help inform Alumni, please contact me.
  • College Planning Night is Jan. 11.
  • Midterms update: Jan. 24 is History and Math, Jan. 25 is English and World Language, Jan. 26 is Science and conflicts. See the current ENews for more details.
  • The Josten’s Sophomore Parent Meeting regarding class rings will be in the café at 6:00 on Jan. 31.

Secretary’s Report from the Nov. 2011 meeting was reviewed by Mary Anne Gorman:

A motion to accept was made by Karen Verblauuw and seconded by Charlene Polomski.

Update by Cindy Simms:

  • Kaplan offered the Practice ACT on Jan. 7. An SAT practice test will be offered on Feb. 11 with Feb. 25 as the snow date. 31 students are registered, some for both tests. It is recommended that next year there is a position of Practice Test Coordinator added to the HSA Committees. This Chairperson would coordinate the registrations and dates with Guidance and Kaplan.
  • Mr. Scanlon asked that HSA pay for the Student Planners again next school year. The cost will be less than this year.
  • The HSA’s Gaming License is renewed every 3 years. It allows us to get permits for 50/50s, the Carnival and the Fashion Show Raffle Ticket Book. You must be a non-profit organization with 501C-3 status to apply. Home and School cannot provide this gaming license to other organizations/sports teams to use for their fundraising efforts. Documentation with the license specifically states that this cannot be done.
  • If you are a current HSA Board Member, please let Cindy know whether or not you plan on returning to your position again next year. If you are not returning, please look for a replacement.

Treasurer’s Report presented by Alicia deTorres:

  • The Fashion Show netted about $20,000 which was very good especially since we did not sell out.

A motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report was made by Cindy Simms; seconded by Mary Anne Gorman.

Back to School Night/Membership Dues Report presented by Carol Wiedemann:

  • Dec. 31, 2011 was the deadline for paying HSA Membership Dues.
  • 231 families did not pay their dues. It is suggested that next year the dues reservation form is mailed in August as was done in previous years instead of sending it via the website.

Project Graduation Report presented by Cindy Simms on behalf of Marybeth Daniels and Estelle Anselmo:

  • Contact Estelle Anselmo @ eranselmo@gmail.com or Mary Beth Daniels @ mdaniels@drew.edu if you are interested in helping. The next PG meeting is scheduled for tomorrow @ 7 @ Kinnelon Library.
  • The next 2 scheduled fundraisers are a Silent Auction for a Lakeland Y family membership and Graduation Announcements.

Carnival update by Cindy Simms on behalf of Maryann Hanley and Katie Stylianou:

  • The Carnival company has been asked if the Carnival can take place on Fri., Sat. and Sun., June 8-10. If so, the Administration would have to approve. The parking lot would be needed Thursday thru Mon. (It is needed Monday to clear the equipment so teachers/students would not be able to use the parking lot that day.) This is the same amount of days as in the past but different days of the week.

Holiday Cookies presented by Cindy Simms on behalf of Stacy Gould:

  • The Holiday Cookies were very well received by the KHS staff.

Senior Composite presented by Cindy Simms on behalf of Stacy Gould:

  • It may be wise to seek another price quote from a different vendor for the Class of 2012’s Composite.

Scholarship Committee presented by Charlene Polomski:

  • A flyer was included in the ENews Newsletter announcing the scholarship details.
  • Some changes have been made to the application.
  • 12 judges besides Charlene are on the Committee and it is almost all freshman parents.
  • Special note must be made that a student is eligible to apply only if their family is a current member of the HSA which means that they have paid their dues for the current year.

Teacher Recognition Luncheon presented by Cindy Simms on behalf of Sue Boyle:

  • The Luncheon will take place again in June.
  • Sue is looking for a replacement starting next year. If anyone is interested, they can contact Cindy Simms and plan to help Sue this year.
