Our mission is a simple one: to provide a learning environment during the formative educational levels, which is filled with rich experiences that enhance the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of the whole child. Our goal is to have our children want to come to school, feel positive about learning and about themselves, and interact with other children and adults in a productive manner. The administration, staff and parents work in concert to create a stimulating educational environment of respect and trust that affords our students the opportunity of risk-taking as part of the learning process. Their high energy, genuine love for children, subject area expertise, and willingness to grow professionally distinguish the Stonybrook School faculty. They provide a variety of opportunities that allow our students to engage in hands-on activities and cooperative projects that address the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The Language Arts program emphasizes literature-based instruction and a process-writing approach. Students publish original pieces and are comfortable and proud to share them with real audiences. Our philosophy seeks to provide a learning environment that encourages higher level thinking skills essential to the development of independent life-long readers and writers. The use of manipulatives in the Math program provides our students with a hands-on approach, through which our students learn practical strategies to develop and to reinforce concepts and real-world problem solving. Social Studies and Science are presented thematically. Students are encouraged to work cooperatively to develop hypotheses, to solve experiments, and to create projects that allow for connections between their lives and the past and present world around them. Special area teachers present Art, Music, Physical Education, World Languages, and Guided Study. The band and chorus perform concerts throughout the year that are well attended by the community at large. Computer technology is a powerful tool that allows our students to learn technological skills through project-based activities that are integrated across the curriculum. Professionals trained in the fields of Special Education and Gifted and Talented instruction address the diverse needs of our student body. Field trips, guest speakers, community service-based projects, and cultural arts assemblies, many of which are sponsored and funded by an active and supportive parent body (KEHSA), further enrich the learning experiences for the children at Stonybrook School. The Stonybrook School community is proud of its accomplishments. It is the strong partnership that exists between the school and the parent community that makes all of Stonybrook's successes possible. |
