With Earth Day fast approaching, students at Kiel and Sisco have been learning about ways to take care of our environment. One of the activities that many students participated in to raise evironmental awareness was the Paperbag Project. This is a free activity that thousands of schools around the world are involved in for Earth Day on April 22, 2008. The basic idea is this: a school obtains large paper grocery bags from a local grocery store, students at the school decorate the bags with colorful environmental messages, the bags are returned to the store, and the store hands them out (filled with groceries) to shoppers on Earth Day. Our supporter for this major undertaking was Pathmark and we thank them for their partnership in our quest to teach students they can be supporters of our earth and reinforce the idea to reduce, re-use, and recycle to our local community. Designing the grocery bags was an exciting way to make young students feel that it is not hard to do something environmentally friendly for the earth.
