THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF KINNELON HIGH SCHOOL

The first graduating class of KHS, the Class 1965, began its freshmen year at Butler HS  fifty years ago. While the building itself did not open until the fall of 1962 , the Kinnelon High School Administration think it fitting to celebrate the 50th anniversary during parts of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years to recognize the transition of our first class.

Some of our initial and tentative plans include inviting alumni to some of our concerts/productions later in the year, organizing an alumni basketball game, having a get- together in the spring when our teams have home games, hosting a special homecoming game in the fall of 2012, and ending with an anniversary banquet that would include the inauguration and first induction to a Kinnelon Hall of Fame.  The Hall of Fame will honor former athletes, those who have made major contributions to their communities or our nation through leadership, service, or the arts, and finally former staff members who gave so much to KHS during their careers.

It is most important to have the input of a representative planning committee including alumni from each decade of the school’s history.  If you are interested in serving on such a committee or for planning one or more of these events, please contact Kinnelon High School Principal, Dr. Wayne Merckling at mercklingw@kinnelon.org or 973-838-5500ext.1101.

KHS Since 1962:

A Tradition of Excellence in Academics, Arts and Athletics

Pride in the Past , Commitment to the Future

KHS's tradition of excellence was recognized in June, 2011 by Newsweek with its ranking of 182 of the top 1100 American high schools.

In July, 2011 the Advanced Placement Program named 54 KHS students as Scholars. Fourteen members of the class of 2011 and 1 member of the class of 2012 were named AP Scholars with Distinction. This prestigious recognition is granted to students who receive an average score of 3.5 on 5 or more exams. In addition, 4 members of the Class and of 2011 and 4 members of the Class of 2012 were named Scholars with Honor while five students were honored in the National Merit Scholars Program.  

In the performing arts, we began the 2011-12 school year by being notified that 4 of our students were accepted to the ACDA All-Eastern Chorus, which represents high schools in Maine through Maryland. These students will represent New Jersey next February in Providence, RI. Eleven of our vocalists gained membership in the Morris County Honors Choir.

This fall season  our girls’ soccer team successfully defended  their Liberty Division Championship and earned the privilege of playing in the Morris County Championship game while our Lady Colt’s Cross Country Team earned silver medals in the NJ State Sectional and again in the NJ State Group Championships.

As we move into 2012,  we will be celebrating Kinnelon High School’s Golden Anniversary with a variety of events as we memorialize the journey of the graduating class of 1965.
