Introduction
The Kinnelon
School District recognizes the need to identify and appropriately
educate those students who demonstrate academic abilities beyond
those of their chronological peers. As a result, students who are
identified as such will be provided with a diversified curriculum
that facilitates the emergence and growth of their talents and assists
students in reaching their potential.
Philosophy
The Kinnelon
School District is committed to an educational program that recognizes
the unique qualities of each student. The Enrichment program provides
a curriculum modification that targets that group of learners who
possess exceptional academic abilities. The program acknowledges
the uniqueness of the exceptional learner and is designed to address
the academic, social and emotional facets of each individual.
Goals
- To provide
a receptive, stimulating atmosphere that will challenge the unique
capabilities of the academically advanced students especially
in the areas of creativity, higher level thinking skills, problem
solving, logical reasoning, inductive and deductive thinking,
listening, and interpretive skills.
- To set expectation
levels for students that are high enough to stretch their potential.
- To provide
high interest topics for students that will encourage their further
exploration with particular emphasis on pace and depth of understanding.
- To address
not only common adolescent development concerns, but also those
that are unique to the exceptional learner and nurture their decisions
and relationships through appropriate planning and programming.
- To use research-based
information to plan and implement a program of study.
Objectives
- To encourage
active and productive thinking.
- To promote
critical thinking and problem solving abilities.
- To promote
creative thinking.
- To promote
independence and leadership skills through activities that nurture
these components.
- To identify
individual interest areas which can be pursued in greater depth
that is usually possible in the regular classroom.
- To foster
independent study activities by providing students with training
in investigative and research techniques.
- To help develop
an increased awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses as
realistic goals are set.
- To help develop
sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others as skills of self-expression
and evaluation are practiced.
- To encourage
self-development through community awareness and interaction.
- To develop
a cooperative attitude through interaction with peers.
- To be a resource
for parents and teachers about giftedness and the current research
on programs available.
